Tourism
Surroundings
VERONA:
Is one of the major art cities in Italy for its artistic and archaeological treasures. Hence the new urbs marmorea (marble city), resplendent in the white pavement of Piazza delle Erbe, at the center of which stands the bright fountain of Madonna Verona. The most famous monument ever, which has become a symbol of the city itself, is the Arena, the third Roman amphitheater in Italy for size.
DESENZANO:
Is not only a tourist town, it is a real city alive and active in all seasons, preferred destination for winter weekends and shopping afternoons. The internal road that runs parallel to the lakeside starts from sixteenth century Piazza Malvezzi and offers more than a kilometer of elegant shop windows alternating with tables of pubs, wine bars and clubs specialized in cocktails and snacks. Worth a visit are the Castle, the Cathedral, the Archeological Museum in the former Monastery of the Carmelites, the mosaics and the excavations of the Roman Villa.
PESCHIERA:
Is one of the most peculiar towns of Lake Garda. It’s completely surrounded by canals and rises at the point where the waters of lake flow out in the emissary Mincio. Walking in the village you can see the ancient Venetian walls that now surround Betteloni square, beside the harbour. Above Piazza Ferdinando di Savoia (a.k.a. Piazza d’Armi) there are the Military Prison and the Parish Church of St. Martin (XVIII century). Beach lovers can find beautiful pebble or sandy beaches, as well as beaches dedicated to the dogs, like the new Braccobaldo Bau Beach.
SIRMIONE:
Is built on a long peninsula that divides in two the south part of the lake. The tourists walking along the beautiful gardens that line the road leading to the old part of the town, can see the Veronese Coast on the East side and the Bresciana Coast on the West side. Right on the tip of the Sirmione peninsula, there are the ruins of a large roman villa, the “Catullo caves”, that preserve ancient paintings of I and II century B.C. Tall, crenellated walls protect the Scaliger Castle and the medieval village.
BORGHETTO SUL MINCIO:
Tiny fraction of Valeggio, is an ancient village of mills in complete harmony with its river. The great medieval fortifications give a peculiar look to the landscape of Borghetto. Walking on the great Visconti Bridge you can admire the Mincio, which opens up and is channeled in canals conveying the water towards the large blades of the ancient mills, now converted into small local receptions for tourists. From the top of the hill the Castle dominates the Mincio valley with its towers.
CASTELLARO LAGUSELLO:
Is located on a hill, overlooking a small heart-shaped lake. All around rise the hills of the morainic amphitheater of Garda, a few kilometers from the lake shore. Of the ancient castle, built on a natural hill north of the small lake, still remain the walls, four towers, some sections of the walkway and two rustic medieval houses.
